Which barrel suits your organisation most?

Our range of jerry cans and barrels consists of many different designs, sizes and materials. But which type is most suitable for your environment? To make a good choice, you will find an explanation of all our jerry cans and barrels below. In addition, we can provide you with all the information about what can be stored in which type of jerry can or barrel, and why a quality mark may be important in your case.

Standard jerry can

A standard jerry can comes with a screw cap as standard and is available in various capacities, from 2.5 to 20 litres. They are suitable for transporting both dry substances and liquids and are widely used in the packaging industry and by wholesalers. These jerry cans are made of HDPE plastic material and are available in various colours. The different colours allow you to easily distinguish between the different liquid contents. Each colour is assigned to a specific liquid category to prevent the wrong liquid from being transported in the wrong jerry can. The different colour codes are shown below:

  • Red: flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel and kerosene
  • Yellow: flammable liquids such as alcohol, ethanol and methanol
  • Blue: non-flammable liquids such as water
  • Green: pesticides, herbicides and other agricultural chemicals
  • White: acids and corrosive substances such as sulphuric acid and caustic soda.

The colour codes of jerry cans may vary depending on the country or region where they are used, so keep this in mind. It is important to understand and check the colour codes before using a jerry can to ensure you are storing or transporting the correct liquid and to avoid potential hazards.

UN quality mark for hazardous substances

If you are going to store or transport hazardous (liquid) substances, the means of storage, or packaging, requires a UN quality mark. This quality mark confirms the packaging is suitable for the transport of these hazardous substances. The quality mark is issued by an independent inspection body.

Hazardous substances are divided into three groups: Group 1 is made up of the highly hazardous substances, and Group 3 is made up of the least hazardous substances. There are certain requirements for the transport of these goods, depending on the class of the substance. Kruizinga has both jerry cans and barrels with the required UN quality mark. This means you can be sure you have the right products for the storage and transport of your substances.

Solid and liquid substances

A number of our products are more or less suitable for a certain type of substance. The plastic barrels with screw lids are very suitable for solids such as animal feed or food ingredients. On the other hand, they are not suitable for hazardous liquids because they have only been tested for use with solids. Steel barrels or plastic barrels with a clamping ring are suitable for (hazardous) liquids, such as fuel or chemicals. These have an extra safe closing system and are approved for the storage and transportation of hazardous substances.

HDPE plastic, what is that?

HDPE is an abbreviation of high-density polyethylene. It is a kind of plastic material widely used in various applications. HDPE is a thermoplastic polymer made from ethylene monomers; it is characterised by its high strength-to-density ratio.

HDPE is a versatile material with a wide range of properties, including resistance to impact, chemicals and UV radiation. It is also a lightweight material that is easy to manufacture, and it has excellent moisture resistance.

HDPE food grade is a specific type of HDPE plastic that is suitable for use in the food industry.
